Scripture

Mark 1:14-15; Matthew 7:24-29

Shape: Shadow Circle

The Learning Circle teaches us that, sometimes, challenges and worries are opportunities to learn about the Holy Spirit calling us into a new awareness of His participation in our lives.  Small group discussions are great places to share and examine such challenges and struggles of life.  Many people receive support and insight in such formats, and they are a blessing.  However, in the small group culture, it is common to receive advise and directives from others about issues we face.  Our friends and family usually default to telling us how we should behave to FIX our issues.  These approaches point us toward other people, not necessarily toward the Truth of Christ.  Also, people struggle with being where they really are and allowing God to meet them there.  Therefore, they "backpeddle" from a Kairos through Deflection (trying to redirect the subject elsewhere), Diffusing (It's not really a big deal to me), and Denying (I didn't really experience God in my midst), using those three techniques to desperately get back to their regular life.  The traditional approach to sin, visible through a negative Kairos), is to focus on managing the sin through altered behaviors, fighting the temptation to act better, getting exhausted, and failing again.

Story

It's common knowledge that men like to fix problems, especially in response to a wife's story-telling about some difficulty of life. Men want to fix things, and "just listening" is unnatural and hard. This habit extends beyond the cliche. My wife will often advise her mother on navigating life's issues, providing the wisdom that life experiences has provided. Sometimes, when I'm aware of those moments, I can whisper "Walk the Circle" to my wife, and I can see her posture change. She becomes immediately receptive, taking in information rather than pouring information out verbally. Grace becomes the posture instead of directives.
