Scripture
Ephesians 4:11-14
Shape: Shadow Pentagon
Temptations that cause misery can relate to a person's Base Ministry.
A Base Prophet that needs Approval from others will be in misery. A Base Apostle or Evangelist may often be controlled by Ambition. A Base Teacher or Pastor may struggle primarily with Appetites.
Also, equating our Identity with our Base Ministry is a way of replacing the Father with other things. This shadow is the classic challenge of defining who we are by what we do.
Story
For several years, I held a senior management position at my place of employment. I recall when first receiving the promotion how surprised I was at the way people responded to my new authority, especially people that I had worked with for years. Over the years, I forgot that people respected my position, and confused it with being respected personally. I subtly began to interpret their acceptance of my direction to their acceptance of my ideas and perspectives...the truths I held out. I recall being irritable at home when my family didn't extend the same level of acceptance in response to everything I said. Having Prophet as my base ministry, I now recognize that I had been lured into an addiction to the Approval from others, and had internalized it as part of my identity. Praise Jesus for revealing this particular sin to me and helping me to grow out of it.
