Scripture

John 15:1-12, Exodus 20:8

Shape: Shadow Semicircle

The world presses performance anxieties into our hearts and minds. The pressure to compete and to gain a sense of self-worth is ever- present. When we succumb to the pressure in unhealthy work/rest patterns, we start to experience other forms of escape from the pressure. Rather than rest that re-creates us, we medicate with drugs, alcohol, and food. Or, we over-commit to entertainment activities under the illusion that we are taking time off (have you ever had to rest from your vacation?). On the work-side, rather than feeling accomplished and satisfied with our production, we feel a sense of pressure to perform, and strive constantly for ever-increasing recognition, confusing striving for long-hours with actual production.

Story

I have a friend that is strung out. He experiences life in near constant exasperation...feeling that the crises of the day dictate his movements and that he never has enough time. He spends his days striving to please his spouse and family (who are similarly high- strung) in a subtle cycle of earning their acceptance. Rather than sharing life through peaceful co-existence, their home is a combative environment of bickering and discontent. Establishing a regular bedtime and rest-period are impossible for him. We pray for the Spirit to break through his heart and reveal to him the simple, profound power represented in the Semicircle, that will enable him to lead his family in Christlike cycles of rest and productivity.
